On August 22, the FDA sent a warning letter to GIB LLC, the manufacturer of Brazilian Blowout, accusing them of misleading the public about the safety of its hair straightening service. Despite the fact that OSHA, Congress and FDA studies warn of dangerous levels of formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowout products, GIB LLC continues to deny these allegations.

In fact, it now appears that instead of responding to the recent FDA warning with voluntary and prompt corrective action, GIB LLC has chosen to fight the FDA with a public campaign to defend its “alleged” adulteration and misbranding of Brazilian Blowout. On its website, GIB LLC is asking stylists to join the company in a protest by sending a personalized letter to Dr. Linda Katz, Director for the FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors, asking for further review of the product.

As we discussed in an earlier blog, stylists are left in a tough position – it is certainly in their best financial interest to believe GIB LLC and continue to provide the very popular, effective and expensive service – but, to do so potentially puts their health at risk.

We will continue to monitor the actions of GIB LLC with respect to the FDA warning. It certainly appears that GIB LLC has left the FDA no choice but to initiate enforcement action.
