Daiichi Sankyo, the Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturer of Benicar, has agreed to a $300 million settlement for failing to warn consumers that the blood pressure medication could cause gastrointestinal illness.
Did you suffer from and seek treatment for one or more of the following symptoms?
- Chronic diarrhea
- Rapid and excessive weight loss
- Renal insufficiency or renal failure
Approved by the FDA in 2002, Benicar is a prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, in children and adults.
Hundreds of lawsuits were filed around the country in 2015, many of which were consolidated into a multi-district litigation in New Jersey. The parties and their lawyers will now turn their attention from litigation to settlement.
The settlement applies to consumers who took the drug prior to May 17, 2015. For those who believe their gastrointestinal illness was caused by a Benicar prescription, action must be taken by August 23, 2017, to qualify for the settlement.
